Privacy & Data Protection

Your privacy matters

This policy explains what information we collect when you visit this website, why we collect it, how we use it, and the choices available to you.

Who we are

This policy covers the website operated by Population Council-Kenya, a local entity registered with the Kenyan NGO Coordination Board and an affiliate of Population Council Kenya. It explains what information we collect when you visit this site, why we collect it, and the choices available to you. It applies only to this website (Population Council Kenya) and not to the websites of other Population Council country offices or our global office in New York.

Information we collect

We collect information in three ways:

  • Information you give us directly. When you use the contact form, submit a donation, sign up for our newsletter, or email a department listed on the site, we receive whatever you provide — typically your name, email address, phone number, and the content of your message. Donations are processed by Stripe on our behalf; we do not store your card details ourselves.
  • Information collected automatically. Like most websites, our server and analytics tools log standard technical data — IP address, browser type, device type, pages visited, and referring pages — to help us understand how the site is used and to keep it secure.
  • Preferences stored on your device. A small number of features, such as remembering that you have already subscribed on the Knowledge Hub, save a flag in your browser's local storage. This stays on your device and is not transmitted to us.

Cookies and analytics

When enabled, we use Google Analytics (GA4) to understand aggregate traffic patterns — which pages are read, how visitors arrive at the site, and which content areas are most useful. Google Analytics uses cookies and similar technologies to do this. We do not use these tools to build advertising profiles of individual visitors, and we do not sell or rent visitor data to third parties. You can block or delete analytics cookies at any time through your browser settings; the site will continue to function normally without them.

How we use your information

  • To respond to enquiries sent through the contact form or by email
  • To process and issue receipts for donations
  • To send newsletter updates to people who sign up for them
  • To review applications submitted for job openings, tenders, or internships
  • To monitor, secure, and improve the performance of this website
  • To meet legal, regulatory, and reporting obligations as a registered NGO in Kenya

How we share information

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with service providers who help us run this website and our programs — for example, Stripe for donation processing and Google for site analytics — and only to the extent needed for them to perform that function. We may also disclose information where required by Kenyan law or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Population Council-Kenya, our staff, or the public.

How long we keep information

We retain contact, donation, and application records only for as long as needed for the purpose they were collected — typically the duration of the enquiry, grant, or recruitment cycle, plus any period required by Kenyan financial or NGO record-keeping regulations. Newsletter contact details are kept until you unsubscribe.

Your rights

Under Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019, you have the right to know what personal data we hold about you, to request a copy of it, to ask us to correct or delete it, and to object to or restrict certain uses of it. To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below.

Children's information

Our research and programs often concern the wellbeing of adolescents and young people, but this website is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children through it. Data gathered as part of our research studies is governed by separate, study-specific consent and ethical review processes, not by this website policy.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time to reflect changes to the website or our data practices. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last revised.
