Population Council Kenya

Ideas. Evidence. Impact.

Population Council Kenya generates high-quality, context-specific evidence to address the health and development challenges facing underserved populations across Sub-Saharan Africa.

We envision an equitable and sustainable future for the health and wellbeing of all people within Kenya and the rest of sub-Saharan Africa.

Population Council Kenya is a Nairobi-based, locally rooted research organization with a regional mandate across sub-Saharan Africa. As part of the global Population Council network, we specialize in generating rigorous, context-relevant evidence to address complex health and development challenges affecting underserved populations. Our work is anchored in a research-to-impact model that integrates epidemiological, behavioural, and health systems research with active engagement in both policy and program design, implementation, and scale-up.

Our Impact

Evidence to Action

01

SRHR Programming and Policy in Humanitarian Contexts

Through the Baobab Program, we produced some of the first rigorous data on sexual and reproductive health outcomes in refugee settings in Uganda and Ethiopia, identifying high levels of violence, low contraceptive uptake, and elevated unintended pregnancy rates — evidence now informing SRHR programming and policy in humanitarian contexts.

02

The Female Genital Mutilation Data Hub

Established new global standards for tracking and responding to female genital mutilation, combining nationally representative surveys, real-time dashboards, and policy tools used by governments, United Nations agencies, and civil society actors.

03

Kenya's National Malaria Strategy (2023–2027)

Our research has directly informed the National Malaria Strategy, improving uptake of intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy through strengthened community delivery systems, and contributed to programme guidance to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV in low-resource settings across the region.

04

Gender Equality in Education (County Action Plans, 2026–2030)

We supported the development of county-level gender in education action plans and generated evidence to strengthen inclusive social protection systems for marginalized adolescents, while providing technical assistance across sub-Saharan Africa to enhance equitable employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for Africa’s youth.
