Young women in an urban empowerment program

DREAMS (Determined, Resilient, Empowered)

Reducing vulnerability among adolescent girls and young women in informal settlements through combined health, education, and economic support.

Overview

DREAMS works where risk concentrates — the informal settlements of Nairobi and Kisumu — to reduce vulnerability among adolescent girls and young women. The approach is deliberately layered: health services, staying in school, and economic strengthening reinforce one another rather than standing alone.

Population Council Kenya’s role is to test that layering: which combinations, for whom, produce durable change.

Objectives

  • 01Reduce health and economic vulnerability among AGYW.
  • 02Keep girls in school and connected to services.
  • 03Strengthen household economic resilience.

Our approach

The program integrates service delivery with evaluation across two urban settings, comparing packages of support to learn what combination moves outcomes for the most at-risk young women.
