Annovera Contraceptive Acceptability Study
A two-country study on the acceptability of Annovera®, a one-year contraceptive vaginal ring, to inform its positioning within regional family planning programmes.
Many women in sub-Saharan Africa continue to face limited contraceptive options that align with their health needs, preferences, and daily realities. Despite global evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of Annovera®, a contraceptive vaginal ring that provides up to one year of pregnancy prevention while remaining under user control and allowing for regular menstrual cycles, little is known about its acceptability in African contexts.
Population Council Kenya, in partnership with the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Centre for Biomedical Research (CBR), Harare Health and Research Consortium (HHRC), and MSF Zimbabwe, is implementing a two-country prospective study using a mixed-methods approach to assess acceptability and user experience, and generate evidence that could inform Annovera’s positioning within family planning programmes in the region.
Assess women's acceptability of, and experience with, Annovera in Kenyan and Zimbabwean settings. Generate evidence to inform national and regional family planning policy and product-introduction strategies. Support efforts to expand contraceptive choice and reproductive autonomy for women across sub-Saharan Africa.
Our approach
The study uses a mixed-methods approach to follow participants over time, tracking side effects, menstrual changes, and convenience relative to existing methods.
