School-Based Screening for Child Sexual Abuse

A seven-month school-based screening model that dramatically increased identification of, and access to care for, child sexual abuse survivors in a humanitarian setting.

Overview

Sexual violence against children is significantly underreported in humanitarian settings such as Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement, limiting survivors' access to timely care and protection. Among adolescents aged 13–17, only 6% disclose abuse, underscoring the urgent need for approaches that move beyond passive reporting to proactively identify and support vulnerable children.

Population Council Kenya implemented a seven-month school-based screening intervention to test a scalable model for early identification and referral of survivors, training 11 para-social workers to provide child-friendly screening, counselling, and referrals across two primary schools.

Test a scalable, school-based model for early identification and referral of child sexual abuse survivors. Train para-social workers to deliver child-friendly screening, counselling, and referral within existing community systems. Strengthen referral pathways so identified children are consistently linked to care.

Our approach

Working through existing community systems, the project trained para-social workers to conduct proactive, child-friendly screening in schools rather than relying on passive reporting, then linked identified survivors directly into referral pathways for care.
